Do You Think Out Of Shape People Can Give Good Fitness Advice?
It seems like a case of books smarts (Reading up on all the latest diets, speaking with personal trainers, taking classes on nutrition etc) vs street smarts (Learning from experience, knowing tips the book cannot instruct you, knowing what works and what merely sounds good on paper)
Do you think out of shape people can give good fitness advice? and Why?
examples to ponder on: An overweight doctor? or nutritionist? your crazy neighbor who’s tried each diet known to man?

Out of shape people can and do give good advice. You do not have to be a follower of something just to have knowledge about it. An overweight doctor can sit and lecture you about how you have to eat healthy and that is hypocritical, but it is not false.

Of course!!! It doesn’t matter how much you weigh or how “in shape” you are. Why should anybody get to decide the definition of “in shape”. You should know whats healthy based on experience or just plain knowledge. Just because someone is “out of shape” and they are trying to give fitness advice doesn’t mean that they don’t know what they are talking about. Their situation could come genetically or for some other reason that you don’t know about.

Yes, they can talk the talk, but not be able to walk the walk for various reasons. Maybe they have a physical disability that you can’t see or is visible. You can’t judge a book by its cover and this may be the case.

I went to a doctor after my parents found out I was bulimic, I weighed 107 pounds, and the doctor told me to lose weight. she was about 210 pounds. I cried.
I think that if you want GOOD advise, ask the people with experience.

Academically yes, but i’d rather listen to someone that practices what they preach.
Anyone can read a book and sound intelligent. but when i have joe 6 pack standing their who has actually worked out 6 days a week and you can see the proof of his sweat and workouts then i would rather listen to joe 6 pack.

because just because their out of shape now doesnt mean that they have never been in shape before and dont know what their talking about..
